Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of biofloc in two culture systems on the growth and survival of male Macrobrachium caementarius. The experiment was conducted in 12 glass aquariums (55 L), arranged in four treatments consisting of the combination of two types of shelters (individual containers and onion mesh netting) and two water conditions (with biofloc and without biofloc). A total of 72 prawns, averaging 6.21 cm in length and 11.95 g in weight, were used. The results showed that the greatest weight gain was obtained in treatments with individual containers and biofloc (p < 0.05), while length growth did not present significant differences among treatments (p < 0.05). Survival was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in treatments with individual containers in non-biofloc water (88.89%), compared to mesh in non-biofloc water (27.78%), individual containers in biofloc water (27.78%), and mesh in biofloc water (16.67%). In conclusion, biofloc promotes shrimp weight gain; however, excess suspended solids and cannibalism reduce survival. Therefore, it is recommended to optimize the flow to keep biofloc suspended in aquariums to improve growing conditions and maximize species survival.
